BIO

RUBY MUSE is UK songwriter-performers Jools Heyes and Mal Heyes. Based in Cambridgeshire UK, they specialise in creative alternative folk/roots that is contemplative, quirky and strong.

‘Something different and special!’ The Poetry Lounge

Jools and Mal have been working quietly from their countryside home down the years, writing, recording and self-releasing their material, whilst honing their performance skills in clubs and venues throughout Cambridgeshire and the midlands. During this time they gained a name for strong songwriting and performance, playing at Cambridge Folk Festival and Strawberry Fair, and at the prestigious How the Light Gets In (Festival of Philosophy/Arts). They have also supported successful artists including Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran co-writer), Henry Priestman (ex-The Christians) and Pete Williams (founder of 80s hit band Dexys Midnight Runners), and had their music placed in award-winning US film & TV dramas (‘Cheat’ in Ravenswood and ‘Mr Horizon’ in Banshee).

Ruby Muse are compelling. They deliver warm-hearted, genre-busting and original music. Their sound wraps ambient alt-blues, folk-rock and chilled Americana around songs and poetry with strong lyrics, intense themes and beautiful harmonies – then sprinkles them with touches of ‘70s flower-power and prog-dust to create distinctive soundscapes. Influences are varied and range from Bach to Bob Dylan and beyond, with listener comparisons to artists as diverse as Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, John Martyn, Fleetwood Mac, The Blue Nile, Morcheeba and Pink Floyd.

‘Emotionally charged and atmospheric songs that grow in stature on each hearing’

R2 Magazine

Two full-length albums are available: ‘rm’ (2006) and ‘Red Guitar In A Blue Room’ (2011/15). The latest EP ‘Just Like You’ was voted #3 in Noizze Magazine’s TOP TEN 2017 releases. In July 2018 Mal and Jools signed with The Animal Farm record label in London, who describe Ruby Muse songs as “rare and potent”. The label is planning to release a string of the duo’s singles over the next few years; the first being ‘Clouds & Rain’, due for digital launch in September 2018.

‘Silver-laced songs, filled with the edge of Americana and the gentle repose of love’
